Jasmin Savoy Brown on queer characters

scream Star Jasmin Savoy Brown has opened up about the huge impact of playing the franchise’s first queer big-screen role.

Jasmin Savoy Brown, best known for his electronica role on Showtime yellow jacket, playing Mindy Meeks-Martin in the upcoming movie (and the title is confusing) scream.

Released 25 years after the original in 1996, the film sees a new killer don the horror garb of Ghostface and terrorize the residents of Woodsboro.

Mindy is one of a new group of teens joining some of the franchise’s original characters to stop Ghostface.

Brown told and It’s a “huge honor” to play queer Mindy. She explained that the role felt “very right” to her because she was able to bring “a version of herself” to the film.

“It just reflects who I am in family life,” she said. “A lot of actors do it with their different identities, whether it’s straight or filling in the blanks.

She continued: “So, I became a version of myself on screen, in scream.

“When I think about the impact, it’s a big deal.”

Brown was “particularly grateful” for being able to “engage myself in this project.” She shared that she even had to “cooperate on a lot of scenes” and “bring some of my wardrobe” to bring “Mindy’s identity to life”.

in a separate interview digital spy, Jasmin Savoy Brown said it was “very cool” and “exciting” whenever she “did any gay representation”.

“I thought: It’s lovely to be able to celebrate every bit of my identity as a woman of color,” Brown said.

She also joked in the interview, scream The character Mindy Meeks-Martin has a definite “gay hairstyle” which she believes is really the “most important” thing to stand out.

“It’s funny because it’s a gay hairstyle, and that’s the most important thing, showing different hairstyles that we gay people like,” Brown said.

scream Icon Neve Campbell recently hinted that there might be some truth behind the fan theory that the movie’s characters Billy (Skeet Ulrich) and Stu (Matthew Lillard) are secretly gay.

Campbell, who plays Sidney Prescott, said a potential romance was “very likely” because the series’ writer Kevin Williamson “has come out and talked more about it.”

“Well, I don’t know, because Kevin didn’t make it clear to me that’s it, but it’s a possibility, right?” Campbell said.

But Campbell believes there is “some confusion” between the two characters. She speculates that “some of their anger” may come from “not being allowed to be who they want to be”.
